The area’s economy is indeed growing. The trade sector is the largest followed by agriculture and mining. Mining activities are currently concentrated on coal and silica. Million metric tons of coal and 2 million metric tons of silica are mined annually in Victor Khanye. Agriculture is the main source of employment in the area and is growing constantly. As a result of building structures such as the shopping complex being incorporated in the area, the construction and the trade sectors are progressing. A project to build a cargo airport is underway. Eskom is currently running a project worth R89 billion to build a coal fired power station. The station is said to be the biggest in the world, whereby local businesses will benefit 25% of the project.

Victor Khanye municipality took an initiative to come up with the economic development strategy that outlines the following business opportunities available at Victor Khanye Local Municipality. Investors are invited to invest in getting the following projects off the ground.


Minor projects.


  • Plan, develop and maintain a brick making factory.
  • Plan, develop and maintain an industrial laundry.
  • Plan, develop and maintain a car wash.
  • Plan, develop and maintain a chicken rearing enterprise.
  • Provide information on business opportunities to potential investors.
  • Plan and establish four co-operatives owned by young people and women.
  • Hosting the local economic development summit.

Major projects.

  • Construction of a cargo airport.
  • Development of a comprehensive business plans for local economic development projects.
  • Creation of a one stop business advisory centre.
  • Promoting agro- processing to entities within Victor Khanye of jurisdiction..



IDP REPRESENTATIVE FORUM


This forum is chaired by the Executive Mayor and it is composed of Business Representatives (various sectors), the Religious Groupings, the Community Development Workers, the Political Parties Representatives, Traditional Leaders viz. Mabhena and Mahlangu, Youth Organisation and other community stakeholders who in the main will:

  • Inform their respective constituencies on the planning processes and the outcomes thereof
  • Analyse issues presented, prioritise them and reach a conclusion
  • Be part of the process of identifying projects and assessing their relevance.
